Our Impact
We give a platform for the stories and people highlighting the impact of climate change in their area. Here’s some of our recent work.
North Yorkshire farmer “exhausted” by flooding
May 24: Round Our Way spokesperson, Richard Bramley, spoke to The York Press about the impact climate change is having on his farmer in Kelfield.
He said flooding and warm weather in recent years are “colossal issues” for British farmers. He also wrote a first-person piece where he explains in greater detail what life on the farm is like.
Valentine’s Day chocolate prices surge due to climate change
February 24: New analysis by Round Our Way shows cost of Valentine’s chocolates up 21% since 2022. Rising cocoa prices due to extreme weather linked to climate change means chocolate is now almost 9.5 times more expensive than oil weight-for-weight. Prices have risen largely due to extreme weather impacting crops of the two major ingredients in chocolate: cocoa and sugar. The story was featured in The Daily Express.
The UK cannot grow its own cocoa and sugar, and almost everything we import comes from countries with low climate readiness, i.e. those most at risk from climate impacts with limited capacity to respond to them.
'Disgusting filth': Bacteria with significant risk to human health found in flood waters
January 24: New lab tests commissioned by Round Our Way showed flood water across the country poses a significant risk to human health
The flood water from recent floods affecting residential streets, parks and play areas was found to contain high levels of bacteria. Sadly, as climate change brings more wet weather, people we spoke to were very concerned that this flooding could get even worse in future.
Our work on the issue featured on the ITV News at 10, The Sun, The Mirror, The Daily Express, The Independent and various regional and local TV, radio and newspaper outlets.
Cuts and climate change drive potholes to record-high
January 24: Round Our Way launched new research showing the impact the changing climate and council cuts have on the state of British roads. Potholes are at a 5-year high and have grown significantly in the last year due in part to our increased storms and floods.
The research was featured on BBC Breakfast, BBC News at 1 and 6 pm, BBC Scotland’s The Nine, BBC News online, various regional and local radio stations and national and local newspapers.

Grassroot sport faces huge bill due to climate weather
November 23: New research from BASIS (The British Association of Sustainable Sport) and Round Our Way finds boggy sports grounds and ankle-deep puddles are becoming a fixture of UK amateur sport, with ground staff struggling with rescheduling and cancellations.
The report charts significant impacts on amateur sports across the UK including 132,644 cricket overs lost to rain in the ten seasons played between 2013 and 2023.
A poll commissioned by Round Our Way for the report finds that up to 64% of spectators and players say that extreme weather conditions are making supporting grassroots sports harder.
Roger Harding: “Of course working-class people care about the climate crisis: they emit the least, but will suffer most”
November 23: Round Our Way director, Roger Harding, wrote a comment piece for The Guardian about how working-class people care the most about the climate crisis but will suffer the most from the impacts.
