England’s coastal spots starting to see more unhealthily warm nights due to climate change

July 24: Sleep is being impacted by climate change due to warmer nights, analysis from Round Our Way and Climate Central shows.

Southern coastal towns were hit the hardest by the rising nighttime temperatures with Clacton-on-Sea recording 25 nights when temperatures were above 20°C and 132 additional nights higher than 18 degrees over 10 years, attributable to climate change. Margate was just behind, experiencing 15 more nights at 20 degrees and 130 more nights above 18 degrees. The story was featured in iNews and the Clacton Gazette.

Nearly 45,000 trains have been cancelled over the last 10 years due to flooding

June 24: There were 44,919 train cancellations and 1,488,854 minutes (1,034 days) in delays recorded between 2013 and 2023 due to flooding caused by severe weather, according to new analysis from Round Our Way based on freedom of information (FOI) requests to Network Rail. The story was shared exclusively with Sky News.

ScotRail was the worst affected operator, recording 8,371 cancellations, followed by Northern Trains with 5,814 and Edinburgh was the most affected planned destination, recording 1,805 cancellations, followed by Leeds with 1,342 and Glasgow Central with 1,187.

Sunscreen prices increase by 30% putting low-income families at risk

June 24: The cost of sunscreen has jumped by nearly 30% in the last two years, according to analysis by Round Our Way.

Analysis of Office for National Statistics data shows that the average cost of a factor 15 sunscreen in May 2024 was £7.44. This is a 27% increase on May 2022’s figures when the average cost was £5.84. Consumers are now spending an extra £1.60 on sunscreen than they did two years ago. The story was featured in iNews.

Record number of flood warnings for Britain in winter 2024

June 24: Up to 40 flood warnings a day were issued on average in Britain in the first few months of 2024, the highest since records began, according to data obtained by Round Our Way.

The statistics obtained by Round Our Way from the Environment Agency (EA) under the Freedom of Information Act, reveal that nearly 5,000 flood alerts were issued across Britain between January and April this year.
